LONDON Glassblowing has just celebrated its silver anniversary, making it one of the oldest and more successful glass studios in Europe.

 
Hot property: Peter Layton takes glass from the furnace; marketing takes second place

When Peter Layton started his workshop in 1976, there was no market this side of the Atlantic for individual works of glass art.

The workshop made its name through pioneering techniques such as iridescent glass. It no longer makes iridescent glass but maintains its reputation for innovation, particularly in colour.

Mirage, a large bowl by Mr Layton shown at a recent exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, recreates the colours of the Jordanian desert around Petra.

The team at the studio, which moved in 1995 to the Leather Market by London Bridge, makes decorative glass art for galleries and one-off pieces to commission.
